T. Shane Smith
Shane Smith, a native of Athens, Alabama, fulfilled a lifelong dream by starting Steel City Law in early 2017. Shane previously served as an attorney for Legal Services Alabama, Lloyd & Hogan, P.C., and was a shareholder at White Arnold & Dowd. The entirety of Shane’s career has been devoted to the practice of family and matrimonial law, with over ten years of experience in the field. He received his B.A. In Psychology from Auburn University in 1998, his M.S. in Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2002, and his J.D. from Birmingham School of a Law in 2006.
Shane’s practice is devoted to divorce and family law and to assisting and representing individuals in complex matrimonial matters, including those with personal or business assets and custody disputes. Mr. Smith has extensive experience in domestic relations, domestic abuse, Protection from Abuse, child custody, and paternity and child support issues. Shane also handles criminal and complex civil litigation arising from matrimonial matters and has received extensive training as a mediator.
In addition to the practice of law, Shane is trained as a parenting coordinator, helping separated and divorced couples tackle the hurdles of effective communicating and co-parenting. Steel City Law’s services include adoption and estate planning for families in transition. Shane has served on the board of the Alabama State Bar Family Law Section for five years and currently serves in his second term as the Chair of the section, overseeing the continuing education opportunities for the State’s attorneys in the field of domestic relations and the daily business of the section and its many committees.
Shane served as co-director of the Divorce on the Beach program for three years and is currently the Chair of the Health and Wellness Committee of the Solo and Small Firm Section of the State Bar. He also serves on the Alabama Lawyer Assistance and Diversity in the Profession committees of the Alabama State Bar.
Shane is a member of the Alabama State Bar, Birmingham Bar, and has been a member of the American Bar Association. He is a graduate of the Birmingham Bar Association Future Leaders Forum and the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Institute for Family Law Associates in Chicago, Illinois, and has been named a Rising Star by SuperLawyers Magazine in 2013, a Rising Star by B-Metro Magazine in 2014, a Top Flight Attorney by B-Metro Magazine for 2017, and a Rising Star for the Mid-South by SuperLawyers Magazine in 2017. Shane enjoys an active social and civic life, including a number of chili cook-off awards, and is usually accompanied by his amazing dog, Truman.
